Teaching skills workshop of the English teachers

Focussing on the need to develop the teaching skills of the English teachers and ways to equip themselves  as effective  language teachers and motivators a workshop was conducted from 29/3/16 to 1/4/16. Around 11 teachers actively participated in the work shop. The first session began with an icebreaking activity followed by a PPT on the characteristics of an effective English teacher, as well as the importance of English language and the development of the four quintessential skills of Listening ,Speaking ,Reading and Writing was focussed .

On the first day of the session emphasis was laid on the development of  the writing skills of the students through various  interactive discussions .The teachers were given an idea on  the various techniques to be used in the classroom teaching to enhance the writing skills of the students. Various formats of long and short compositions were discussed the teachers showed great enthusiasm in learning the new techniques and the session ended on  a positive note.

The second day began with a discussion on the importance of the development of speaking skills of the students, role of an examiner and characteristics of a good speaker. An idea on how to conduct classes on ASL for (classes from 1 to 8 )was given. Emphasis on developing the teachers own pronunciation, fluency and use of creativity was given in order to train them to be better facilitator. Various new activities like Role Play,Just a minute, Picture Description, etc. introduced in the school curriculum were discussed and was also done as an activity with the teachers For the first time choral recitation was introduced and the teachers were given an idea about it through a video on choral recitation on the poem  All the world’s a Stage ‘.The primary English teachers were given an idea of using puppets while doing poem recitation and were also asked to make puppets and do as an activity which they enjoyed a lot .

On the third day the importance of the listening skill   and the role of examiner was also discussed .A listening test was conducted for the teachers to test their skills. Later half of the session was based on developing the Reading Skills of the students emphasising  the need to develop their pronunciation, voice modulation, expression etc. Objectives of developing silent and loud reading was emphasised and tips of enhancing the comprehending ability of the students  were  discussed .

On the fourth day effective ways of teaching grammar using timeline was discussed and a video was shown. The teachers showed keen interest in developing and learning the new techniques. Teachers of the higher classes were asked to prepare a timeline presentation on Tense .Teachers showed eagerness in doing  the various  activities .The workshop ended with lots of fun and positivity to bring change in their teaching strategy to create a better, creative  and conducive environment.
