“A Mile For Smile” walkathon

On 24th January 2016, Mission Smile conducted the inauguration of its 13th Guwahati International Mission by organising a walkathon from the Latasil field to the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital. With an impressive slogan “A Mile For Smile”, the walkathon started early morning at 7 am.

The students of Axel Public School prepared themselves for the run ahead of them and reached the site at 7 am and after sometime everyone was handed a white t-shirt with the logo of the event on it. The weather complimented the event as it slowly drizzled as we started our walkathon.

The place was rather cold and wet but it definitely gave a certain aura to the event that really made it pleasant. Slowly other participants started pouring in and the queue stretched. Forming rows of 4, all of us got excited for the walkathon to start.

The organizers started the event with the familiar wave of the flag and off went all the participants. On our way out, we were handed sheets with slogans written on it for us to chant on our way to the Hospital. There were cheers and screams all around us.

Everyone was chanting to it, if not in unison but in enthusiasm. There were cameraman and TV reporters all around us clicking every moment, every turn of the walk. And the best part was, they were very enthusiastic and cheered us on and even chanted the slogans with us.

After an hour of walking and screaming, upon arrival, we were handed bottles of water and seating arrangement were made and this was followed by the breakfast. Meanwhile, the inaugural ceremony had started with the auspicious tradition of lamp lightening.

This was followed by speeches by a few distinguished people. The organizers adjourned the event by thanking all the participants and the well-wishers for the successful event and soon enough, we were on our way out from the walkathon that managed to wake us up at 6 in the morning and start walking.
